Kentucky woman killed when thrown off ATV; driver charged with homicide, DUI

A Kentucky woman was killed Saturday when she was thrown from an ATV on which she was a passenger, state police said. The driver of the ATV has been charged with vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence.
The accident happened at approximately 11:17 p.m. on Saturday.
Kentucky State Police, Post 13, Hazard, received a 911 call in reference to a single-vehicle collision on Highland Drive, located in the Jackson community of Breathitt County.
Troopers, along with medical personnel, responded to the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates that Logan Spencer, 23, of Lexington, was operating an ATV on Highland Drive when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn over an embankment.
Alexis Smith, 22, of Lexington, a passenger in the ATV, was ejected as a result of the collision. Smith was pronounced deceased on scene by the Breathitt County Coroner’s Office.
Troopers on the scene detected indicators of impairment from the operator.
Spencer was placed under arrest and transported to Kentucky River Regional Jail, where he was lodged and charged with (1) one count of Vehicular Homicide and (1) one count of Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence 1st.
Toxicology results are pending at this time. No Seat belts were in use at the time of the collision. Trooper Branden Watts is reconstructing this incident, which remains under investigation.
