Kentucky man being evicted shoots at landlord’s house, killing 86-year-old man, state police say

A Kentucky man who was being evicted allegedly drove to his landlord’s residence and peppered the house with gunfire, killing the 86-year-old man, state police say.

On Saturday morning, Kentucky State Police were called to investigate a shooting at a residence on Old Montpelier Road in Adair County.

Detectives launched an investigation into the incident and determined that Joseph South, 57, of Columbia, was in the process of being evicted from the residence he was renting from Earl Coffey, 86, of Columbia.

Investigators said South arrived at Coffey’s residence and fired several rounds from a firearm into the residence.

Coffey suffered fatal injuries from apparent gunshot wounds. Four other people were also in the residence at the time of the shooting. Their condition was not reported by police, but were apparently not physically injured in the shooting.

Joseph South was located and detained at the scene by the Adair County Sheriff’s Office. Detective Dexter Colvin arrested and charged Mr. South with Murder and 4 counts of Wanton Endangerment – 1st degree. South was lodged in the Adair County Jail.
