A Guatemalan man plead guilty to attacking a 9-year-old Kentucky boy with a machete when he was playing on a basketball court with friends.

Estevan Portugues entered an Alford guilty plea. An Alford guilty plea means Portugues admits a trial would likely yield a guilty verdict, but he does not admit to committing the crime himself.

Portugues was reportedly so drunk that he does not remember committing the crime.

The attack happened in May of 2019, while the 9-year-old boy was playing basketball with friends at a park when Portugues and two other men showed up and when Portugues reportedly stabbed the boy.

The victim, who is now 12-years-old, has fully recovered from his injuries.

Portugues’ plea calls for him to be deported once he is released from prison.

He will be formally sentenced next month. The recommendation is eight years in prison.
