The case against a Bowling Green woman suspected of being impaired behind the wheel during a crash near Warren County Regional Jail that seriously injured her child will proceed to a grand jury.

A preliminary hearing took place Wednesday in Warren District Court in the case against Sanela Husejnovic, 33, who is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure of non-owner operator to maintain insurance.

Husejnovic was arrested Oct. 4 by the Bowling Green Police Department in the wake of a crash that occurred on Kentucky Street near East 10th Avenue.

BGPD Officer Max Mueller testified that he arrived at the crash site early in the afternoon of Oct. 4 and found that a 2009 Honda Accord struck a utility pole at the intersection.

Mueller said he and a number of Warren County Regional Jail employees attempted to extricate Husejnovic from the driver’s seat as she held a girl later determined to be 8 years old.

“There was severe bleeding from the child’s head and neck area and she appeared to not be responsive at all,” Mueller said.

Officials forcibly removed the child from Husejnovic’s grip, and the 8-year old was taken to a trauma center for treatment.

Mueller testified Wednesday that the child suffered fractures to her jaw, leg and foot.

Husejnovic was detained by police and when questioned about what caused the crash, she told officers she had taken drugs, Mueller said.

Husejnovic was treated at The Medical Center for injuries.

“She advised hospital staff that she took meth and purposely tried to hurt herself and her child,” Mueller said. “She was later connected with a translator and recanted her statement.”

Mueller said police spoke with a witness who reported seeing a vehicle travel recklessly on River Street shortly before the crash and another witness who reported that she was traveling on Kentucky Street with four children when she was struck by a vehicle before the crash occurred.

Husejnovic is in Warren County Regional Jail under a $100,000 cash bond, online jail records show.
