Officers: Mom charged after she locks children out of house, left shivering in rain

A Kentucky woman is behind bars after officers found two children locked out of their house in the rain Monday night.

Holly Abshire was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal child abuse, two counts of fourth-degree assault, menacing and resisting arrest after Troopers broke were forced to break into her home to attempt to wake her up after they responded to a call from a neighbor who found the children around 9 p.m.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Troopers found a 6-year-old boy and his 8-year-old brother outside their house in the rain, One of the boys was reportedly not wearing a shirt or shoes.

Abshire could be seen by officers in the house through a window but was reportedly unresponsive. Troopers broke into the home to wake Abshire, who woke up and started yelling obscenities at the troopers.

Abshire was placed under arrest after becoming combative with the troopers, the citation states. She reportedly shoved one of the troopers during the incident.

The boys told the officers that they have been treated badly by their mother and had been beat up at times. The older boy reported being slammed to the ground and being stepped on. Trooper reportedly found visible marks on the older boy, but none on the younger boy.

Abshire was taken to the Pike County Detention Center on a $1,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
