Police say a Kentucky man, who was extremely intoxicated, shot and killed a woman while attempting to teach her how to use a handgun

Officers arrested Shane Walters of Taylor Mill, Kentucky, in connection with the death of Megan McCray, 33, of Goshen, Ohio. McCray was shot and killed on Feb. 10 in the Northern Kentucky community. The shooting happened around 6:15 p.m. on Knollwood Drive.

A police investigation revealed the shooting took place at Walters’ home. Walters was reportedly showing McCray how to disassemble and reassemble a handgun when the gun in Walters’ hand discharged hitting McCray.

Walters and his roommate called 911 and attempted CPR but McCray died from her wounds, police said.

Walters told police he did not know the handgun was loaded when he pulled the trigger in an effort to “release the slide and remove it.”

Walters also denied being under the influence, but further investigation determined that Walters was “extremely intoxicated” at the time of the shooting.

“Affiant believes Walters wantonly caused the death of McCray by handling a handgun while he was extremely intoxicated and pulling the trigger of a gun pointed at McCray when he knew, or should have known, the handgun was loaded,” Taylor Mill police wrote in a press release Monday.
